Counting on Culture

Last November the Ottawa Cultural Research Group (OCRG) released counting on culture, the first extensive cultural industries indicator of its kind in Canada. The work of an innovative public-private partnership between the City of Ottawa, the Ottawa Cultural Alliance and cultural industries organisations like the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition and Ottawa Film Office, Counting on Culture takes a close look at the scope, economics and impact of culture in Ottawa.

Nik, actively involved in the OCRG since 2017, took on the task of designing the report(s), including their infographics.

Ottawa Music Strategy

In April 2018 Ottawa City Council adopted its first official music strategy. Through their work with the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition, Nik & Martyna are responsible for making sure that the vision outlined in this strategy document is realized by working with stakeholders across the music and creative industries to implement its industry-side recommendations.

From better utilizing Ottawa’s capital city advantage to building the most inclusive & diverse music community in the world, this ambitious strategy is broken down into clear, realizable steps charting the course for the next three years.

Every great city needs a voice. Co-founded by Sheena, who remains editor-at-large, FREQ Magazine pushes the boundaries and digs deep in order to shine a spotlight on everything that makes cities weird, wonderful and world-class.

From the designers, artists and activists you should be on the look-out for to the club nights and festivals you’ll never forget, FREQ is a no holds barred look at the music, fashion, art and culture shaping and being shaped by underground culture.

Ottawa Music Survey

For any big, bold new economic development project to work, it needs to have the buy-in needed to work, it must reflect the needs and priorities of both industry and residents - those whose daily lives stand to be affected (and hopefully improved!).

When Nik designed the Ottawa Music Survey as part of the consultation process for the Ottawa Music Strategy, it was important to find a way to engage not just the usual suspects, but also the general public who keep the industry alive by packing the city’s festivals and filling its venues year-round. The key findings of the survey are shared in the strategy.
