Creative Industries Labour Market Insights

Particularly in the creative and cultural industries, growth is highly dependent on the availability and retention of top quality talent. Understanding the local, provincial and national labour markets is critical to planning and can help give your municipality, organization or business a competitive edge. From community outreach to fill vacant positions and reassessing ‘standard’ candidate criteria to salary transparency and keeping employees front and centre when deciding where to locate your HQ, knowing what the labour force expects and what it wants puts you in a better position to meet and anticipate needs.

On October 25th, Nik Ives-Allison (in her role with the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition) will be talking about the specific labour market challenges and opportunities faced by the creative industries in Ottawa as part of Ontario Creates’ discussion series breakfasts. We’re anticipating there will be lots of talk about how provincial funding requirements and restrictions affect access to inter-provincial talent pools within the National Capital Region especially as housing affordability makes Gatineau an increasingly attractive option for young creatives as well as a look at how local companies are working to ensure they reflect an increasingly cosmopolitan workforce. Nik will the joined on the panel by Ottawa Film Office’s Bruce Harvey and Melanie Rutledge from Magazines Canada. The panel will be moderated by Work in Culture’s Lisa Fiorilli.
